Stand Up Paddle Boarding - A Brief History
Back in the early days of Hawaii’s Waikiki, the renown Beachboys used to stand up on their longboards when they took guests out to the waves of the famous Waikiki shoreline.
From the legendary Duke Kahanamoku to the many other respected watermen of the day, the Beachboys taught water skills and shared their Hawaiian aloha with their clients who included many rich and famous people who came to the large, famous hotels.
Known as hoe hee nalu in the Hawaiian language, stand up paddle surfing is also known as SUP. This was a popular activity during the time of the Beachboys who also liked to keep an eye on their clients from the higher vantage point of the stand up paddle board. Throughout the 1960s these Beachboys used this form of water craft, which was also good for taking pictures of the tourists in their charge.
Who is responsible for the modern revival of Stand Up Paddle Boarding?
The sport of stand up paddle boarding and stand up paddle surfing was revived in the last decade by a new generations of Hawaiians including Brian Keaulana, Mel Puu, Dave Kalama, Bruce DeSoto. Also instrumental in the renewed popularity of stand up paddling was renown waterman and extreme surfer Laird Hamilton.
